About Soumya Sarkar
Full Name: Soumya Sarkar
Date of Birth: February 25, 1993
Birthplace: Satkhira, Khulna, Bangladesh
Role: Left-Handed Batter | Right-Arm Medium Bowler
Wearing jersey number 59, Soumya Sarkar embodies flair, elegance, and explosive potential. When he’s on song, few can match his stroke-play—the effortless lofted drives, the silken flicks through midwicket, and the confident pulls that make him a joy to watch. But behind that elegance lies a journey of persistence, reinvention, and quiet resilience.
Soumya hails from Satkhira, the same region as Mustafizur Rahman, and came through the ranks with strong performances in age-group cricket and at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP). His early career was marked by impressive performances at the Under-19 level, where he showed glimpses of his aggressive style and ability to take on bowlers from the first ball.
He made his ODI debut in 2014 against Zimbabwe, but it was in 2015 that the world took notice. During the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Soumya was an integral part of Bangladesh’s historic campaign, and in the months that followed, he dazzled during the home series against Pakistan and India. His ability to dismantle bowling attacks at the top of the order made him a fan favorite, and expectations soared.
One of Soumya’s most memorable innings came in 2015 against Pakistan, when he smashed an unbeaten 127 in a run chase, helping Bangladesh win the series 3–0—a first in their history. He brought freshness to the top order, combining aggression with natural timing, and quickly became a regular in all three formats.
Though known primarily as a batter, Soumya also contributed with the ball. His gentle medium pace has earned him handy breakthroughs in both ODIs and T20Is, making him a valuable all-round option.
However, Soumya’s journey hasn’t been without its dips. Inconsistency plagued his career, with fluctuating form causing him to drift in and out of the national setup. But to his credit, he never stopped working. He kept performing in domestic cricket and gradually made his way back to the team with improved technique and renewed focus.
In 2023, Soumya returned with a bang, scoring a match-winning 169 off 151 balls in an ODI against New Zealand, showing his ability to deliver on the big stage when given the opportunity. It was his highest ODI score and a reminder of the potential that had once made him one of Bangladesh’s brightest young stars.
Off the field, Soumya is soft-spoken and humble. He is deeply spiritual, family-oriented, and stays away from the limelight. Despite his ups and downs, he remains a beloved figure in Bangladesh cricket, known for his dedication, humility, and never-give-up attitude.
With jersey number 59, Soumya Sarkar is a story of flair and fight. While his career has had its ebbs and flows, when he finds his rhythm, he reminds everyone of the power of persistence and the poetry of a left-hander in full flow.
