About Chris Morris
Full Name: Christopher Henry Morris
Date of Birth: April 30, 1987
Birthplace: Pretoria, South Africa
Role: Right-Arm Fast-Medium Bowler | Right-Handed Lower-Order Batter | All-Rounder
Chris Morris was South Africa’s high-voltage all-rounder—capable of winning matches with both bat and ball in a matter of overs. Known for his electric pace, powerful hitting, and infectious energy, Morris played with passion and flair that made him a fan favorite around the world. His cricketing journey was one of hard-earned success, peaking in both international and T20 franchise cricket.
Born in Pretoria, Morris was the son of former first-class cricketer Willie Morris. Despite the cricketing lineage, Chris didn’t have a fairy-tale entry into the sport. He toiled for years in domestic cricket for Titans and Highveld Lions, polishing his skills as a pace-bowling all-rounder. It wasn’t until his late 20s that he broke into the South African side, debuting in a T20I against New Zealand in 2012.
Morris became known for his death-overs bowling—replete with yorkers, pace variations, and bouncers—and his fearless, match-turning cameos with the bat. His ability to strike at over 150 and deliver clutch overs in high-pressure situations made him a prized asset.
Career Highlights Include:
- Represented South Africa in all three formats, with over 40 ODIs and 20 T20Is
- Played in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, finishing with 13 wickets
- Recorded best T20I bowling figures of 4/27
- Played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore
- In 2021, became the most expensive player in IPL history at the time, bought by Rajasthan Royals for ₹16.25 crore
Morris’s explosive batting—especially in T20s—made him one of the most feared finishers. Whether it was clearing boundaries in the final overs or rescuing South Africa from collapses, he had a knack for performing under pressure. With the ball, his bounce, clever slower deliveries, and tight lines often put batters in trouble, especially in crunch moments.
Though his international career was often disrupted by injuries and team combinations, Morris remained a central figure in domestic and league cricket worldwide. He retired from all forms of cricket in January 2022, choosing to transition into coaching.
With jersey number 2, Chris Morris remains one of South Africa’s most exciting modern-day all-rounders—a cricketer who brought the heat, the heart, and the fireworks every time he took the field.
