About Axar Patel
Full Name: Akshar Rajeshbhai Patel
Date of Birth: January 20, 1994
Birthplace: Anand, Gujarat
Teams: India National Team, Delhi Capitals (IPL), Gujarat (domestic)
Axar Patel, often spelled “Akshar,” is Indian cricket’s dependable left-arm all-rounder — calm, composed, and consistently effective. In a team brimming with flamboyant stars, Axar goes about his business quietly, but his performances speak volumes. Whether it's choking runs with stump-to-stump accuracy, breaking partnerships with smart variations, or contributing crucial lower-order runs, Axar has become an indispensable asset to India across formats.
Born in Anand, Gujarat, Axar didn’t start out as a spinner. In fact, his dream was to be a fast bowler. However, a coach suggested he switch to spin due to his natural control and physique — a move that proved to be career-defining. His cricket journey wasn't always smooth. While still in college, he battled injuries and even doubts about whether he should continue with the sport. But Axar’s perseverance and discipline saw him break through the domestic ranks with Gujarat.
His rise began with a standout Ranji Trophy season in 2013–14, which earned him a spot in the IPL with Mumbai Indians initially, though he gained prominence with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). In the 2014 IPL, Axar was named Emerging Player of the Season — a recognition of his control, economy, and maturity beyond his years.
Axar made his ODI debut in June 2014 against Bangladesh and impressed with his tight spells. However, he remained on the fringes of the national side, competing with Ravindra Jadeja for a similar role. Despite being in and out of the team, Axar never lost focus, continuing to perform in the IPL and domestic circuits.
His career-defining moment came in February 2021, when he was drafted into the Indian Test squad against England after Jadeja was injured. On debut in Chennai, Axar announced himself in style. Across the four-match series, he took 27 wickets in just 3 Tests, including four five-wicket hauls, and played a key role in India’s series victory. His accuracy, pace, and ability to exploit even the slightest turn made him a revelation in red-ball cricket.
Axar's contributions in limited-overs cricket also grew steadily. In T20Is, he’s known for his miserly economy and knack for taking wickets at crucial moments. In ODIs, his all-round abilities — especially his late-order hitting — have earned India valuable depth. In 2023, Axar played an important role in India’s Asia Cup and World Cup campaigns, being a key member of the squad, even if not always in the starting XI.
In the IPL, Axar has become a vital cog for the Delhi Capitals, both as vice-captain and all-round match-winner. His calmness under pressure and strategic thinking have often guided DC through crunch situations, especially with the bat in death overs.
Off the field, Axar is quiet, grounded, and focused. In 2023, he married Meha Patel, and he continues to remain humble despite his growing stature in Indian cricket.
Axar Patel is the embodiment of silent strength — never the loudest in the room, but always among the most impactful. He’s not just a backup — he’s a mainstay, a match-winner, and a modern-day all-rounder India can always count on.
